We recently attended client Sangiacomo Family Wines virtual wine tasting with some colleagues to spread the word about Sangiacomo’s new curated tasting experience. We are partnering with them on a blogger wine club, so we attended the tasting with a few participating bloggers. We had the pleasure of tasting four fantastic wines with the guidance of one of Sangiacomo’s friendly and knowledgable sommeliers, all via Zoom.

Our intimate tasting was attended by (left to right, top to bottom) Sangiacomo Wines Sommelier Kara Joseph, Emily’s Marketing Associate Jesse Rowland, Emily Martin, blogger wine club member Nupur Singh, and for a portion of the tasting, Sangiacomo Family Wines Partner Steve Sangiacomo.

The tasting was guided by one of Sangiacomo’s incredible Sommeliers, Kara Joseph, who is an Advanced WSET. She led us through a tasting of the Sangiacomo 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, 2017 Roberts Road Pinot Noir, 2018 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and 2017 Oakview Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Before diving into the tasting, Kara gave us an overview of the story behind Sangiacomo Family Wines, their vineyards, and the generations that have upheld the family business. The Sangiacomo family has been farming in Sonoma for three generations, but it wasn’t until Mike, Steve, and Mia Sangiacomo entered the operation that they started making wine. With the skill and guidance of winemaker James MacPhail, Sangiacomo Family Wines has created some of the most beautiful and delicious wines in the Sonoma Region.

Sangiacomo 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

The tasting began with the 2018 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. This wine won the Best of Show and Best of the Best awards in the 2020 North Coast Wine Challenge. What makes this Chardonnay stand out is its layers of aroma, which is a common characteristic among wines made with fruit from multiple vineyards. On the nose, the wine reveals notes of apple, pear, and honey, followed by petrichor, and subtle spice resembling nutmeg and clove. On the palate, it is dry with an elevated acidity and round texture. The tasting notes include fresh stone fruit and meringue, and the finish is pleasant and long-lasting.

2017 Roberts Road Pinot Noir

Next up was the 2017 Roberts Road Pinot Noir, winner of the Gold Medal in the 2020 North Coast Wine Challenge and Best of Class in the 2020 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. On the nose, this wine exudes a distinct smell of cherry and a captivating note of moss or woodiness. There are also aromas of pomegranate, red apple skin, and a little pop of smoke. On the palette, we found medium-plus acidity, medium and integrated tannins, along with flavors of red cherry, jammy fruit, and sage.

2018 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The third wine we tasted was the 2018 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. This wine won the Silver Medal at the 2020 North Coast Wine Challenge. Appearing slightly darker than the previous wine, this Pinot Noir had notes of dark red fruit, cherry, leather, allspice, licorice, and toast on the palette.

2017 Oakview Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The last wine we tasted was the new 2017 Oakview Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Visually, this wine is a deep, dark purple. Kara stated its pigmentation is dark enough that it “stains the tears” on the glass. On the nose, we smelled black currant, blackberry, along with notes of purple flowers, cigar smell, potting soil, cloves, and toast. On the palette, this Cabernet Sauvignon is begging for a meaty pairing. With intense, elegant, and striking tannins, it would balance out a rich steak perfectly, and will taste smooth and silky in about fifteen years.
